A kettle is the only thing you need.

The best coffee gear on a four-day backpacking trip is the gear you don't have to carry, wash, calibrate, or repack. Which is why we don't bring any of it.

We used to. Two of us, one AeroPress, a hand grinder, a scale that would fall over every time the tent shifted, and a small pouch of beans that had to be resealed with a rubber band every morning. It worked. We drank pretty good coffee, at a pace of forty minutes per cup, while everyone else was already on the trail.

The reason coffee-gear-in-the-woods feels absurd is that it doesn't optimize for the thing you're there for. You're not there to drink better coffee than you'd have at home. You're there to drink coffee outside, before the world starts.

A kettle. A sachet. Four minutes. Pack out the sachet.
